The Role of the Hips in Golf Performance

Why Hip Function Is Essential for Golfers

The hips are the engine of your golf swing. More than just a joint, the hip is a powerful ball-and-socket structure that connects the pelvis to the femur (thigh bone). Healthy hips give golfers the ability to rotate, transfer weight, and generate explosive power — all while protecting the lower back and knees.

  • Mobility for Rotation – Proper hip rotation allows a smooth backswing and follow-through.

  • Power Generation – Strong glutes and hip extensors create the force that translates into clubhead speed.

  • Stability & Balance – Hip stabilizers prevent swaying and maintain consistent posture throughout the swing.

  • Injury Prevention – Tight or weak hips often lead to low back, knee, or SI joint pain in golfers.

Key Hip Muscles in the Golf Swing

Hip Flexors (Psoas, Iliacus, Rectus Femoris, Sartorius)

  • Control address posture and hip hinge.

  • A tight psoas limits backswing rotation and stresses the lower back.

 Hip Extensors (Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings)

  • Glutes are the “powerhouse” of the downswing.
  • Hamstrings support stability and balance in setup and follow-through.

 Hip Adductors (Inner Thigh Muscles)

  •  Prevent excessive sway and keep your stance grounded.

Hip Abductors (Gluteus Medius, Minimus, Tensor Fasciae Latae)

  •  Stabilize weight transfer between legs and control lateral movement.

Hip Rotators (Deep Six, including Piriformis)

  •  Fine-tune hip rotation for proper backswing coil and downswing clearance.

How to Improve Hip Function for Golf

  • Stretch Tight Hip Flexors to free up rotation.

  • Strengthen Glutes and Abductors for more power and balance.

  • Train Rotation Safely with mobility drills and yoga-inspired exercises.

Muscles of the Outer Hip (Abductors)  The muscles on the outer thigh abduct the hip
